When the crisp autumn air is blowing across Texas, and colder weather is in the air for late 2026, it's time to begin thinking about cold-weather starts, battery drainage, and fuel degradation. But with cooler weather doesn't come the need to store your bike in the garage until Spring!

They are some of the most comfortable rides of the year, no matter if you're riding a high efficiency 150cc moped to work, a compact moped scooters 50cc for campus runs or a quad on an off-road spring break.

We guarantee riders can keep their machines running at 100% all year long at Dallas Power Sport. So here are some of the most important fall and cold weather tips for scooter owners and off-roaders that need to know!

Fuel System Care, Battery Maintenance, & Cold-Weather Ignition

1. Keep Fuel System from Stale Gas Varnish

Fuel with ethanol is more likely to absorb water from the air when the weather gets colder. Even if your bike isn't ridden for a few weeks, the gas may leave a gummy coating that blocks the small carburetor jets.

  • Then add a few drops of Fuel Stabilizer to every 87+ octane gas tank of fuel to keep the fuel fresh for up to 12 months when ridden less frequently during cold weather.

  • Properly full storage tanks have less air space in the tank, thereby eliminating condensation on the inside of the tank.

  • If you are storing your machine for the winter, then you'll need to drain the carburetor bowl. For a sure and quick start in the spring, be sure to turn the fuel valve off and drain the carburetor float bowl.

With basic fuel care and maintenance, you can be sure that your beloved gas moped for sale or trail bike starts on the very first press of the electric start button.

2. Battery & Spark Plug Check for Cold Weather

12V batteries don't last as long when cold as they do during the warm summer months. When it's cold and you're in a rush to get to work or school, a weak battery results in slow starter cranks.

  • Trickle Charger: If your machine is stored in a garage, use a battery trickle charger, with low amps, overnight to keep battery topped.

  • Check the Spark Plug: Remove the spark plug and inspect the gap between the electrode. When the tip is dark, carbon fouled or worn down, replacing the old $5 spark plug with a new one will ensure a robust ignition spark even on a cold morning.

Off-Road Fleet Checks & Street Commuting Gear

3. Tires, Chain Tension & Coolant are covered in Off-Road Fleet Check.

Cool weather means fall plans involve loading up a 110cc youth ATV, or one of the high-speed 125cc dirt bikes, or the two-seater off road go karts for weekend trail trips, and changing soil conditions and slicker mud tracks.

  • Tire Pressure (PSI): Tire pressure will drop about one to two PSI with each 10°F decrease in temperature, especially in cold air. Be sure to check the tire pressure before you go out and roll over wet leaves or loose dirt to ensure maximum traction.

  • Chain Maintenance: Fall trails are wet and muddy and wick away chain lube. After each and every ride, clean and spray the drive chain with heavy duty off-road chain wax, to help prevent rust and early sprocket wear.

4. Street Commuting Gear: Being warm and visible.

Winds chill can make 50°F seem like freezing weather when riding a fully street legal (150cc gas moped) at 30-60 mph.

  • A clear windshield will guide cold air across your chest, keeping your chest warm and dry.

  • Riding jackets, thermal gloves and full-face DOT helmets—wear them to keep warm when riding on public roads.

Modern 4 stroke scooters are an incredible all-season commuter value, particularly if you're looking for something that provides great value on the budget and is a versatile scooter bike or moped to beat the traffic jams.
